Sports History
1882 - The last bareknuckle fight for the heavyweight boxing championship took place in Mississippi City.
1949 - Joe DiMaggio signed a contract with the New York Yankees that was worth $100,000. It was the first six-figure contract in major league baseball.
1958 - The Dodgers officially became the Los Angeles Dodgers, Inc.
1965 - Cassius Clay began using the name Mohammed Ali.
1975 - The New Orleans Jaz ended a 28 game road losing streak.
1976 - Darryl Sittler (Toronto Maple Leafs) set a National Hockey League (NHL) record when he scored 10 points in a game against the Boston Bruins. He scored six goals and four assists.
1976 - Dave Reece (Boston Bruins) played his last game in the NHL.
1985 - "Sports Illustrated" released its annual swimsuit edition. It was the largest regular edition in the magazine’s history at 218 pages.
1988 - Mike Tyson and Robin Givens were married.
1989 - The 40th NHL All-Star Game was played. 1992 - Mike Tyson testified at his rape trial in Indianapolis.
1994 - Michael Jordan signed a contract with the Chicago White Sox to play baseball.
1995 - Joe Mullen (Pittsburgh Penguins) became the first American-born player to score 1,000 points in the NHL. Mullen ended his career with 1,063 career points.
1995 - U.S. President Clinton invited the two sides of the major league baseball strike to the White House in an effort to reach an agreement. The two sides did not resolve the issue that day.
1997 - Jim Kelly (Buffalo Bills) announced his retirement from the NFL. He was the only quarterback to date to guide the same team to four losing Super Bowls.
1998 - The Dallas Stars retired Neal Broten's #7.
2002 - The one-hour television show entitled "NBA All-Star Read to Achieve Celebration" aired.

Warren Sapp Arrested for Domestic Battery
Former NFL star Warren Sapp was arrested by Miami Beach police this afternoon and charged with misdemeanor domestic battery stemming from an allegedly violent confrontation with his girlfriend. According to the Miami Beach Police Department, Sapp is accused of attacking his girlfriend of two years at around 5:00 AM Saturday at the Shore Club Hotel.
According to the arrest report, the alleged victim had "a swollen right knee and bruises on the back of her neck."
She claims Sapp allowed her to sleep in his hotel room -- then came into the room early in the morning and pulled her out of bed. The alleged victim says they began arguing about guys she was hanging out with earlier Friday night.
Sapp's girlfriend told cops that during the argument Sapp "grabbed her and began to choke her." He eventually threw her out of the room, she claims.

Warren Sapp Questioned by Miami Police
Former NFL star Warren Sapp is being questioned by Miami Beach police in connection with a domestic violence case. A spokesman for the Miami Beach Police Department tells TMZ that Sapp is being interviewed by detectives in reference to a domestic battery, but wouldn't elaborate on details.
Sapp is in Miami for the Super Bowl and serves as an analyst for the NFL Network and on Showtime's "Inside the NFL."
The NFL Network released a statement saying they were aware of the incident and that Sapp will not appear on the NFL Network until they review the matter.
Sapp is scheduled to co-host an event at BED Miami tonight. They tell us they haven't heard about the incident and, as of now, everything is still a go.

ATLANTA, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- Josh Smith scored 18 points, collected 14 rebounds and handed out 10 assists Friday in leading Atlanta to a 91-81 win over Chicago.
It was the second triple-double of Smith's six-year career. The Hawks let a 12-point, first-half lead get away, but outscored the Bulls in the final period 27-11.
The Hawks won their fifth straight home game and improved their record to 21-5 in Atlanta this season. Joe Johnson also had 18 points and Jamal Crawford produced eight of his 17 in the fourth quarter.
Chicago, losers of three in a row, got 20 points from Luol Deng. The Bulls missed all of their 10 attempts from 3-point range.

Super Bowl Coach Drops Gargantuan Tip
Indianapolis Colts head coach Jim Caldwell isn't holding anything back for Super Bowl week -- including his wallet -- 'cause dude just dropped a monstrous tip after a coaches dinner in Florida this week.TMZ has learned Coach Caldwell hit Grille 66 & Bar in Ft. Lauderdale on Tuesday night where he and his crew gorged themselves on stone crabs, shrimp, oysters, and "several" orders of the surf and turf.
A source connected to the situation tells TMZ Caldwell and Co. racked up a $2,500 bill -- but left a $1,000 tip ... that's 40%.
TMZ spoke with restaurant manager Peter Brennen who wouldn't confirm the numbers but did admit he was "very generous."
We called the Colts for comment ... but apparently, they're a little too preoccupied at the moment.

Terrell Owens isn't playing in the Super Bowl, but dude has been hard at work in Miami -- judging a bikini booty-shaking competition with his boy Ludacris yesterday.
February.......that sawed off month (28 days)......"Shorty"....."half-pint".....just not up to par with the 11 other months.
February.....cold......rainy.......miserable weather.
February......that scrawny little month....that makes you pay 100% of the rent......even though it's an 80% occupancy month.
February.......that month with no real Holidays.......oh wait.....There is ....Valentines....
What a waist........flowers.........chocolates........romance? In the middle of winter?
