Steve McNair........

A "mans' .....man. A black quarterback who excelled at the highest level. Today, Steve McNair retired from professional football.

No teary eyed press conference..........no fanfare..........just a retirement. So refreshing.....coming on the heels of a guy named Brett Farve..........and that media fiasco. Oh....he's crying.....Oh........so ......Brett!....

No.......McNair had dignity ..........a dignity attained from a life of being .......black.

Nothing came easy..........He was a star quarterback in high school.....but.....none of the big schools recruited him. If they did, they wanted him to play defensive back. After all, he was a black athlete..........he could not (in their eyes) play the QB position in major college football.

College career

McNair, is a native of Mount Olive, Mississippi and played collegiately for Alcorn State University, a historically black university which competes in the NCAA's Division I-AA Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). Many major colleges recruited McNair to play defensive back, but Alcorn was one of the few institutions that recruited McNair to play quarterback. Steve followed the footsteps of his older brother, Fred McNair (who played at Alcorn 1986-1989) and chose to attend Alcorn State University.

In his senior season (1994), he amassed incredible statistics - throwing for 4,863 yards with 44 touchdowns and rushing for 936 yards. McNair was subsequently selected with the third pick in the 1995 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers. McNair was brought along slowly in the NFL by the Oilers, backing up or sharing time with quarterbacks Chris Chandler and Dave Krieg.

I don't believe McNair will ever be inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame........but he will be in my Hall of Fame of great black quarterbacks..........

The Atlanta Hawks are in the play-offs.......well .....kind of......sort of....... Let's see......the Hawks play the number one seed (the Boston Celtics) in the first round of the NBA play-offs. While they are really hyping this in the ATL...........let's get a reality check. Hawks ......get swept..... Coaches get fired.... GM makes promises...........same old Hawks.



I still have a bad feeling about the Atlanta Braves' season. Another pitcher was put on th DL today. Reliever, Peter Moylan joined Rafael Soriano as the latest Brave pitcher to have arm problems. You still pitch with your arm..........right?


The NFL 2008 schedules were released today..........no major surprises..........What we fans wait for is the TV schedule.........What's on Sunday night...........Monday Night...........etc.



Over the week-end..........Denver Nugget star, Carmelo Anthony was arrested on DUI charges.....It's easy to say, "Young, black, and stupid"...........and we here at 5 on Five......have often beaten that drum. There is a reason for everything..........Mr. Anthony, prior to this weekend , had never even had so much as a parking ticket. Seems something happened at his home...........something the media is not privy to...........Facts are forthcoming......So for now, we will hold back on going after Carmelo.....


Tiger Woods underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair a knee.......Injuries .......will be the only thing that keeps Woods from breaking every single PGA record.........period!


Finally..........old man winter will not let go in this southern college town........This morning, there was ..........frost on my windshield!!!!

Finally...finally...It's the 16th of April......if you have not filed your taxes..........shame on you! I ............have filed, received, and spent my refund!!

In a moment that rivals only the Heidi fiasco in the '70's........FOX sports pulled the old switcharoo in Saturdays' broadcast of a New York / Boston Major League baseball game.

With the Sox leading 4-3 in the top of the ninth.........Fox felt impelled to show viewers the start of a Nascar race..........

Yes..........that NASCAR.......the one where the drivers make left turns.....and keep making left turns..........for 500 miles.

Of course........the switchboards in Boston and New York.....went wild.......

Thank God for FOX..........They had an ........FX..........

Good news........

The Atlanta Braves have won 2 in a row.

Bad news..........

The Braves may not have enough healthy players to finish the season. Today, left handed starting pitcher Tom Glavine did not make it out of the first inning........He tweaked some muscle and is day to day. For a 42 year old, tweaking muscles can be career ending.

Pay close attention......Atlanta has already lost right handed starter Mike Hampton (you know, the Mike Hampton who never saw a disable list without thinking his name should be on it)...........The official word is a strained left pectoral. Huh? I think Hampton has created a new position in the medical field. Just naming all of his injuries could be a full time career.

Set-up man, reliever Mike Gonzalez ......he of the 100 mph fast ball is disabled until mid June.....and now.....closer Rafael Soriano has been placed on the DL. Something about tendinitus in his right elbow.

So ............2/5th of the starting pitching is out..........no set-up man in the pen........no closer.......

All I know?............I hope they can hit.......and score some runs.



The University of Alabama held their annual spring football game Saturday...........Mind you, this is a practice inter squad game. Over 78,000 'bama fans were in attendance. 78,000!!!!
There must not be a whole lot to do in Tuscaloosa...................
