Sports History
1929 - The Chicago Blackhawks played their first game at Chicago Stadium. They beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-1.
1972 - The Miami Dolphins became the first NFL team to go unbeaten and untied in a 14-game regular season.
1973 - O.J. Simpson broke Jim Brown’s single-season rushing record in the NFL. Brown had rushed for 1,863 yards, while Simpson became the first NFL player to rush for more than 2,000 yards when attained 2,003 yards in a single season.
1979 - Roger Staubach (Dallas Cowboys) played his last regular season game. The Cowboys came from behind to win the game in the last five minutes.
1990 - Warren Moon (Houston Oilers) threw for 527 yards against the Kansas City Chiefs.
1991 - The Tampa Bay Lightning and Ottawa Senators were officially granted membership in the NHL.
1995 - Fox-TV aired a fight between Mike Tyson and Buster Mathis Jr. Tyson knocked Mathis out in the third round. The fight brought in Fox's highest Nielsen rating to date.
2001 - The Detroit Lions won their first game of the 2001-2002 season against the Minnesota Vikings. The Lions, after the win, had the record 1-12.
2001 - An instant replay decision led to a bottle-throwing melee in a game between the Cleveland Browns and the Jacksonville Jaguars. The decision disallowed a catch by the Browns with 48 seconds left in the game. The Jaguars won the game 15-10.
2006 - During a game in New York, a fight occurred between multiple players for the Denver Nuggets and the New York Knicks. Ten players were ejected from the game. The NBA suspeneded everal players and both teams were fined $500,000.

Sports History
1929 - Providence became the first NFL team to host a game at night under floodlights. The game was against the Cardinals.
1948 - Gordie Howe (Detroit Redwings) made the first of his record 21 All-Star appearances.
1953 - The Rules Committee of organized baseball restored the sacrifice fly. The rule had not been used since 1939.1972 - Joe Namath was featured on the cover of LIFE magazine.
1989 - Lou Piniella was named the manager of the Reds. He replaced the banned Pete Rose.

1993 - Ken Daneyko (New Jersey Devils) set a record when he played in his 322nd consecutive game.
1995 - The FleetCenter, Rose Garden and the Skydome hosted their first NBA games.

Sports History
1920 - The only fatality to occur in a major league baseball game happened. Ray Chapman (Cleveland Indians) was hit in the head with a fastball from Carl Mays of the New York Yankees.
1948 - Babe Ruth died at the age of 53.
1954 - Sports Illustrated was published for the first time. It was claimed that 250,000 subscriptions had been sold before the first issue came off of the presses.
1981 - Cal Ripken Jr. got his first major league hit.
1996 - In Monterrey, Mexico, the New York Mets played the San Diego Padres. The Padres won the game 15-10. It was the first-ever regular season major league game to be played outside the United States and Canada.
2002 - The major league baseball players union announced that they would begin a strike on August 30th.
2002 - Curt Shilling (Arizona Diamondbacks) won his 20th game of the year.
2003 - The Canadian Football League announced that it had taken control of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats franchise until new ownership agreements were in place.
2003 - Jimmy Smith (Jacksonville Jaguars) was suspended four games by the NFL for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
2003 - Michael Vick (Atlanta Falcons) suffered a fractured right fibula in a 13-10 preseason loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

Is it Wednesday.........already?
Just a few things .......to make you stop.......read.......and think....
I promise to be brief....

A "minor" imposition.......
Atlanta Brave outfielder, Jeff Francoeur was sent down to the minors recently in a monumental demotion. A local boy..........golden boy .......and a nearby Parkview High graduate, Francoeur took the city by storm when he burst into the majors three years ago.
In 2005, Francoeur starter 70 games.....hit .300.....had 14 homers and 45 RBI's. In 2006, he played all 162 games.......and again in 2007.......all 162 games.
2006 saw him hit 29 homers and drive in 103 runs while batting a respectable .260 for a second year player..........in his first full season.
2007? 19 homers..........105 RBI's.......and a .293 batting average.......... He also won a gold glove for his defense in right field.......Francoeur is on the verge of becoming a bona fide superstar.
In November of last year..........Jeff marries his high school sweetheart........And this year........on the baseball diamond........it's been a nightmare.
With just 8 homers..........and a batting average of .233.......something has definitely gone wrong......
One .....can't just.......overnight.......forget how to play baseball. Baseball.......though ......can be so very, very mental...
Everything had come so easy to Francoeur all of his life......Well, the Braves sure got his attention by shipping his butt to Mississippi...........Golden Boy? Gold Glove Winner?.......Produce........or else.
The demotion lasted only 3 days.........but I bet Mr. Francoeur will never take for granted the opportunity he has .......playing in the major leagues..........ever again.
The All-stars are set.......well almost...
Major League Baseball and Fox Sports want us to believe the all-star game is worth watching........Because the winner gets home field advantage in the World Series....
I ain't buying it .......for a New York minute! This year's game will
be played in Yankee Stadium.......featuring line-ups that have the usual suspects. A lot of Red sox.....Cubbies......and Yankees...........which fans voted in. Fans..... and their votes........will determine home field advantage for the fall classic.
Something is amiss here.......It is an exhibition game..........It is an added incentive clause on most players contracts........that's it.
To make more of it than that?..........So MLB like. And I........ain't.......watching!

Seems the Joe Gibbs / Tony Stewart marriage........is dissolving ......at the end of this NASCAR season.
Next year, Stewart will drive.......and be part owner of Haas CNC.....and will no longer be a part of that number 20 Home Depot Toyota Camry.
After ten years........2 championships.......and 32 career victories......this successful partnership will end......

My beef is with the media and those headlines....."Vick , Bankrupt".........."Vick files for Bankruptcy".
One does not....."file" for bankruptcy........one may ......."file" for a divorce...... but for bankruptcy..........you "file" for protection.....from your creditors.......So at the end of the day ....you can make a settlement agreeable to all parties.......and still maintain the majority of your assets........
It is a pity that $19 million bonus paid by the Atlanta Falcons was not put in a bank to earn a little interest.
